Reception children visited Whirlow Hall Farm last week as part of their ‘Growth’ topic. The children saw lots of animals and even got to stroke some of them. They also enjoyed making fairy houses in the woods.

Music Week

Ukulele playing from Mike Harrison, vocal techniques from Ben Lidigt at Music Box, songs from the Abbeydale Singers, Violin and Accordion playing from Catharine Pugh, Guitar by Martin Simpson, The Junior School Choir, a performance by two Reception parents as the band ‘Supersister’, Trumpet, Saxophone & Clarinet played by Bronte Ellin… And of course our own talented children playing their instruments too!

Face Britain

All children recently completed a self portrait which was submitted into the national Face Britain project. The portraits will be used to make a montage of the Queen which will be projected onto screens in City centres across the country as part of the Jubilee and Olympic celebrations.

We were visited by fantastic children’s author Conrad Burdekin on monday. Conrad worked with the children creating super hero stories and gave some great story writing tips. The children will be doing follow up work this week and producing their own amazing stories!

Year 2 children have been learning about space from Astronomer Dennis Ashton. As part of the Space topic this term, Year 2 took part in an interactive learning talk where they learnt about our Solar System, measured distances from Earth to other stars & planets, created their very own planet and used 3D glasses to study space in more detail!

A huge thank you to everyone who brought in their old batteries in for recycling last term. We managed to fill up all three tubs within a few days! The tubs were collected today and all the old batteries have been sent off to the recycling plant where the factory will remove the harmfull chemicals and recycle the useful materials. Every battery we can recycle helps the environment so please remember to keep bringing your used batteries to school!

We hope you all enjoyed the lovely summer break and are now ready and raring to go! Our Autumn Term is off to a good start with the children already working hard in their new classes. Of course the new term wasn’t entirely drama free! Those of you walking into school via the top gates on Wednesday will have witnessed a Hedgehog rescue taking place! The Hedgehog is now fine, and being looked after by Molly Simpson (year 2) and family.

Arts Week

We had a fantastic Arts Week this year! The children took part in lots of musical, dance and craft activities throughout Arts Week at the end of May. We had musicians playing cello’s, guitar’s, flute’s, accordion’s & banjo’s, we had artists in helping us to make Willow Sculptures and Papier Mache masks, we learnt Street Dance, and we learnt all about African Tribal Dancing from ‘African Ark’!

OFsted Outstanding!

We are delighted to have received our interim OFsted assessment (March 2011) confirming we are still OUTSTANDING and would like to take the opportunity to say a big thank you to all the children, staff, parents and governors for all your hard work and support. We are very proud of our wonderful school and are pleased that this is recognised by both the Local Authority and OFsted reports over the last few months. Alex Update

A huge thanks again to all those who donated to the Alex Burland Fund. Alex succesfully underwent SDR surgery last Tuesday at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and so far he is doing fantastically well! He has been having physio sessions and can move his feet from side to side and lift his left foot upwards from the ankle which is a positive sign for being able to potentially walk in the future! He will be having another simple operation on March 31st and then more physio to build up strength in his muscles. Well done for being so brave Alex! We can’t wait to see you back at school soon!

We will be returning to school on Monday 5th September 2011 and will be using 2 inset days for Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September. Growing Saturday!

Last Saturday Mrs Cartwright was joined by some kind parent helpers and pupils to help dig our new allotment area. They took part in composting, moving our raised beds, preparing new vegetable beds and plenty of digging! We are now almost ready for the new growing season, and will hopefully have a bumper crop next year!

Fireman Sam!

Reception children enjoyed a visit from Fireman Sam last week! They learnt all about how fire engines work and even got to try out the hose! They were given the chance to explore the fire engine and see some of the equipment fire fighters use to put out fires.

Multi-Cultural Awareness Week

They really loved moving round the school and spending time in different classrooms to learn all about the culture and customs of other contries including: Latvia, Japan, America, Pakistan, Indonesia, Kenya, Greece and France!

Den Building Day!

The whole school took part in an exciting Den Building Day last friday! We had lots of parent helpers and the children loved spending a day outside with their friends and family building, making and creating some fantastic dens! The children worked as teams to build dens made from materials they had collected from the local area such as twigs, branches, boxes and pallets. Cycling for Alex!

Alex Burland’s Dad will be completing a cycling challenge to raise funds for his son’s life changing operation in America. He will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats at the end of the month! The epic journey is 950 miles long and will take Christian around 10 days to complete! Walk to School Month!

As part of Walk to School month Lions class were visited by a lady called Kathryn Harrison. Kathryn showed them all how to make their very own badges using a badge making machine and also brought in a fantastic game to play! The Walk to School scheme aims to help to reduce congestion and carbon emissions, improve public health and make sure every community can enjoy vibrant streets and public spaces.

Lions class had great fun designing their own badges and playing on the giant floor mat game!

Grow Walk Eat – Part 2!

All Saints Church

Year 1 children went on a visit to All Saints Ecclesall Parish Church yesterday. They had a nice walk down and then learnt all about the church from the lovely Vicar Simon Bessant. They were also treated to juice and biscuits while they made drawings of the church. The children have also made some fantastic ‘stained glass windows’ which are now decorating the classroom windows!

Year 2 children visited Castleton last week where they learnt about rocks and caves! Both classes had a lovely day out and enjoyed good weather while they sketched, hiked and explored the Castleton Caves! Sky Dive!

Mrs Betts, Mr Calcutt and Mrs Burland completed their skydive on Saturday to raise funds for Alex Burland. Alex needs to raise over £40,000 for his life changing operation in America. We have been collecting donations and sponsorship for the sky dive in the hopes of contributing as much as we can to help Alex and his family hit their target!

Don’t forget – every penny counts! You can still bring in any contributions you have to the school office!

Grow, Walk, Eat!

As Harvest Festival approaches, the children have been learning about food! This year we are taking part in something called ‘Grow, Walk, Eat’. The children will be learning how food is grown, growing their own food at home and then joining with other local schools in the community to make and eat a meal! This week Tigers class walked to Portercroft School where they paired up with a new friend from the school and made yummy pizza toppings! Some of the ingredients used had been grown by children from Portercroft and it was all very tasty! The Tigers enjoyed meeting new friends as well as tasting their creations at lunch time!

Children’s Centre Open Day

Our brand new Children’s Centre was officially opened last Friday the 17th September! We had lots of information available which explained the services on offer and allowed parents and visitors to contribute their own opinions and requests for the service.
We also had a creche area with toys and games available for the visiting children, and a Library Bus where the children were treated to rhymes and stories!
It was a great morning and nice to meet some of the parents hoping to use the service in the future!

Diving For A Difference!

Alexander Burland – currently in the Koalas class at school – is a bright and happy 5 year old who has Cerebral Palsy. His condition means that he has limited mobility, he can not stand or walk unaided and finds many of the movements we take for granted difficult.

St.Louis Children’s Hospital in America has offered Alexander the chance of life changing surgery – Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy. If Alex is to have this surgery the predicted outcome is that he will be able, among other things, to walk independently using crutches – he currently uses a wheelchair or walking frames. It will also improve his posture and many day to day activities such as dressing and self care will be much easier.

To enable Alexander to make this trip his family need to raise in excess of £40,000. It is hoped that, as a school, we can help them make a great start towards achieving this massive sum.

Mrs Betts has organised a Sky Diving event and will be jumping along with Mr Calcutt, Alexander’s mum (who decided she couldn’t just stand by and watch!) and another friend of the family! The tandem dive will take place on Saturday 18^th September 2010.

Sponsor forms have been sent out (or can be found by following the link below). Forms need to be returned to school by Friday 17^th September. It is up to you whether you want to collect money from people as they state their donation or if you wish to wait until after the big jump! There will be photographic evidence to prove that we jumped both in school and on the website at the end of September!

Please sponsor us if you can and remember every little bit counts.

Walk To Endcliffe

The whole school went on a walk to Endcliffe Park on the last week of term. The children had lots of fun playing in the playground and the staff even joined in too! We had lots of parent helpers and some of our school Governors even joined in too!
It was also really nice to have all of the children together before the Year 2′s left for the Juniors.

New School Logo!

We recently held a competition to design a new logo for the school. After much deliberation – 5 winning entries were chosen. Our new logo incorporates elements from all 5 winning designs:

* The circular text around the outside of the logo was based on Olivia Corke’s design.
* The rainbow colours were taken from the rainbow drawn by Emily Mangle.
* The sheild shape was from Charlotte Nelson’s entry.
* The children’s faces were based on Emma Willatt’s illustrations.
* And the tree element was taken from Tree’s being the predominant element in Mahriyah Ali’s design.

Well done to all our winners and to all those who entered! We now have a logo to be proud of!

The EPA Summer Fete was held on Saturday 3rd July. We were honoured to have the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to open the proceedings! The EPA, staff and parent helpers worked extremely hard to provide an exciting and fun event which was enjoyed by visitors from all over Sheffield!

Children’s Centre Launch Event

We held our grand opening for the new Children’s Centre on Thursday 1st July! We had a ribbon cutting ceremony with lots of visitors including council representatives, school governors and some of the Kier team (including their mascot Kieran!) who worked hard to get the build finished on time!

We are pleased to announce that the Children’s Centre will have its grand opening on the 1st July.
After a quick turnaround on the build we now have an excellent resource which we can begin using in September!

National Sports Week

From June 28th to July 2nd we will be celebrating National Sports Week.
We have been learning about and taking part in lots of different sports including:

* Football
* Basketball
* Running
* Jumping
* Tennis
* Cheerleading
* Throwing
* Hockey
* and many, many more!

Year 2 Abbeydale Visit

Year 2 Children visited Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet where they took part in a Victorian Day! Children dressed up in Victorian style clothing and had a living history lesson where they visited a classroom, washed laundry and learnt how to cut hay using traditional tools!

Between 24th – 28th May we celebrated Arts Week! The children enjoyed learning about different artists and musicians as well as creating their own masterpieces! We enjoyed performances from some of our talented parents including the well known musician Martin Simpson!
